Reading Rainbow Cancelled!

Reading Rainbow

“Take a look.  It’s off the books.  No more Reading Raaaaaiiiinbow…”   That’s right kiddos, Reading Rainbow, the beloved children’s show that was only surpassed in longevity by Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers, is getting canned.  What is most disturbing is not that the show is being cancelled, for surely there will be another program to take its place, but WHY it is being cancelled.

Apparently, the powers that be have shifted their focus away from programs that teach children WHY they should read, to phonics and spelling based programs teaching HOW to read.

Here at MJM Books we are currently working on a customizable alphabet book which will hopefully check both the HOW and the WHY boxes.  For the most part, however, the WHY has been the primary focus of our custom kids books.  Our motto isn’t “Making Kids Read”, it’s “Making Reading Fun”.  The loss of Reading Rainbow is a therefore a loss of a philosophical ally.

If watching that doesn’t make you go, “Awwwww, I freaking loved that show,” I don’t know what will.
