More Free Online Children’s Books

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

We’ve pointed out different public domain children’s book sites like Project Guggenheim and the Rosetta Project before, but those might have been too dated and retro-awesome for some modern mommies, daddies and kiddies.

Over at ChildrensLibrary.org they have full color scans of hundreds of kid’s book titles that are a little more current than my favorite from the 19th century, The Children’s Friend!

Dung Beetle

As you can see from the image above featuring a lovely dung beetle, the buttons at the top make flipping through (and even enlarging) the books easy, though it will never be the same as having a REAL book in your hands.  For the price, though, who can complain!

Another great reason to check this site out is the international translations.  A book written in both English and Spanish could be great study tool or presentation topic for your high schooler!

MJM Books is using Google Voice

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

There are many challenges to running a small business.  It should come as no surprise that funding always seems to be near the top of the obstacle list.  Thus, we here at MJM Books are always on the lookout for new and inovative ways to save money.   And since we’re always looking to help out our fellow man (or woman), when we do come across something noteworthy, we feel it is our civic duty to pass the info along.

Google Voice

Google Voice

Enter Google Voice. Google Voice is a new, and get this, free, application from Google.  But what exactly does it do?

Well first and formost the application gives the user a completely free phone number.   This in itself is a huge bonus for many small businesses as the monthly costs and contracts of maintaining an additional phone line can be significant .

How the phone number works is simple, a caller dials the user’s Google assigned number and then the call is forwarded to another number.   This process is completely seamless to the caller.  So, for example, if you have a cell phone you can have your Google number forwarded to that cell phone.   Or, you can have the Google number forwarded to multiple phones at the same time.

Then, to make things even cooler, your caller ID will tell you that the incoming call is from your Google number!  Now, instead of answering calls from your customers with your typical “Hello” you can add a much more professional “Thanks for calling Bill’s Widget Emporium.  How can I help you?”  This gives the impression that your customers are contacting a proper business rather than some guy selling widgets out of his garage. (Not that there is anything wrong with selling widgets out of one’s garage… but I think you get the point!  :-)   )

Google Voice also comes with a host of cool features like voicemail and voicemail transcription.  Anytime you get a voicemail you’ll get a nifty email with not only the voice attachment but an easy to check written transcription of the message.

Currently Google Voice is in a pseudo-beta period and numbers are only given out by invitation. However, I would encourage anyone with interest in this to sign up.  It really is a great idea and has a slew of practical applications.

Heck, you could sign up for one of these numbers and then give it out to all the telemarketers.  You could record a nasty voicemail message and really give those bothersome folks an earful!

Win a free customizable kids book! Caption Contest #2

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Alrighty there campers, it has come to our attention that we’ve been a bit slack lately with “the giving out of free stuff.”  So to get back into the swing of things we’re firing up our 2nd Monthly Caption Contest!!!  (Please hold your applause ’til the end.)

Since it’s October we figured we’d throw a seasonal image out there for everyone to wrap their heads around.   Now before anyone asks….  Yes, this pic has been floating around the internet for ages; but it is still funny. :-)

The rules again are simple, post the best caption for this picture:

 Witch meets tree.

As usual the esteemed, unbiased, and extremely handsome panel of judges will be evaluating the entries.  A winner will be announced on Halloween so get those thinking caps on and come up with something funny!

Now we know what you are thinking, “Man, winning a free customized children’s book would be  a sweet deal, but I’ve just got too many ideas for that picture.”

Well don’t you fret a bit there, kemo sabe, because we’ve got you covered.  Everyone will get one free entry just for fun (that’s just the nice kinda people we are here at MJM!) However, if you want an additional entry… well that’s gonna cost you… but not much.

For every one of our blog articles you “Digg” you will get one additional entry.

For every one of our blog articles you “Tweet” you will get one additional entry.

Also, to make it super easy for everyone to do that digg’n-n-tweet’n we’ve added nifty links at the bottom of each of our articles.  Heck, you can even go back through the old articles if you like!

So get out there you crazy bunch of knuckleheads… Digg our articles… Tweet our articles… post something daring and creative that makes us chuckle and you could find yourself the proud owner of a sleek, shiny, one of a kind customized kid’s book that will make you the envy of the PTA!

Why Choose a Personalized Kids Book?

Reading If I Were Big 3

Su Chin at ParentReviewers.com gave us a glowing review the other day that made us very proud.  What is most important for us is not that parents think the book is cute and that using recycled paper is neat; it is whether the kids find magic in their books and whether we are “Making Reading Fun”.

The concept behind personalized children’s books is not a new one.  Kids are just crazy about themselves.  They think they are just awesome, which is why a book about someone else (like Cinderella or Jack and Jill) is simply not as interesting as one that is about THEM.

When we go one step further and add custom illustrations of the child, they are “hooked” and suddenly kids who can’t sit still or think that books aren’t as interesting as TV get excited about the wonderful world of reading.

Most touching to us have been testimonials about children who are just learning to read finding the motivation to learn and to be able to “read it all by myself” because of their importance to the story.

So why choose a Personalized Kids Book?  Children can relate more readily to them and that can help you convince your budding reader that there are amazing things to be found in books.  Sure it’s bit of a trick, like adding chickpeas to your muffin recipe, but it’s good for them!!!

Reading Rainbow Cancelled!

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Reading Rainbow

“Take a look.  It’s off the books.  No more Reading Raaaaaiiiinbow…”   That’s right kiddos, Reading Rainbow, the beloved children’s show that was only surpassed in longevity by Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers, is getting canned.  What is most disturbing is not that the show is being cancelled, for surely there will be another program to take its place, but WHY it is being cancelled.

Apparently, the powers that be have shifted their focus away from programs that teach children WHY they should read, to phonics and spelling based programs teaching HOW to read.

Here at MJM Books we are currently working on a customizable alphabet book which will hopefully check both the HOW and the WHY boxes.  For the most part, however, the WHY has been the primary focus of our custom kids books.  Our motto isn’t “Making Kids Read”, it’s “Making Reading Fun”.  The loss of Reading Rainbow is a therefore a loss of a philosophical ally.

If watching that doesn’t make you go, “Awwwww, I freaking loved that show,” I don’t know what will.

More details about Reading Rainbow’s cancellation in the NY Daily Post and The Evergreen Examiner
